Both Samsung and Apple recently introduced Smarttag and airtag respectively and if you aren’t familiar with item trackers you may not understand the point of this $29 black or white plastic puck. But what exactly is the airtag or Smart tag and more importantly how do they work if you decide to buy one.

Samsung’s SmartTag is a small, battery powered device that you can attach to things like a wallet, backpack or even your pet. It has an IP53 rating for water resistance which means it can keep up with your outdoorsy lifestyle. The SmartTag can easily be snapped open to replace the CR2032 battery. It does have one limitation, though. It’s only compatible with Samsung smartphones. Unlike popular Bluetooth trackers like Tile, the Galaxy SmartTag can’t be used with any other Android phone let alone an iPhone.

An airtag is just a tiny tracking device you can put it in a bag, in your purse or on your keys. That way the next time you inevitably misplace any of those items you can easily track them down. The Airtag device is a 1.2 inch plastic puck with a stainless steel back and that back piece can actually be removed by applying pressure and rotating left inside. It has a replaceable coin cell battery like those found in watches that’ll keep air tag powered for over a year once it dies just replace it with a fresh battery no charging required. What Can The Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag Do?

SmartTag has the ability to act as a remote control for the Internet of Things routines. The button on the SmartTag has a single-press programmable function that can be linked to trigger many different IoT and home automation devices like smart lights and thermostats. Its ability to function as a small IoT remote really makes the SmartTag worth its price tag.

If you’re close to the lost item, you use the gauge on the screen to show how far away the item is. The fuller the gauge gets, the closer you are. To help you find the tag, you can make it play a sound.

The SmartThings app can show the last location of the tracker on a map where it was last connected to a smartphone. Samsung is using Other Samsung devices near the tag to anonymously locate it for you, and then let you know where it is, all without the owner of the device doing a thing. It’s done in the background and is encrypted to ensure privacy. 

So if you forgot your backpack with the tracker attached on the park bench, its location will update on your own app in SmartThings even when someone else passes by it. Samsung says that all SmartThings Find user data is encrypted and protected securely.

What Can The Apple AirTag Do?

All users will also be able to keep track of their AirTags in Apple’s Find My app. When they need to locate one of their tiles, they can prompt the tracker to make a sound so it’s easier to locate (similar to how Find My works with a lost iPhone).

If somebody comes upon a lost AirTag, they can tap it via NFC to see information about it, including its serial number (which could be important if you think it’s being used to track you). If the owner has put it in “Lost Mode,” they have the option to have that information page show their phone number and a brief message so you can contact them. This NFC feature works equally well with iPhones and Android devices.

If the Find My network notices that an AirTag has been separated from its owner for a while and seems to be in the same place you are, it will alert you. If you’re an iPhone user, you’ll see a notification that says “AirTag Found Moving With You.”

Apple says that there are options to disable these “Safety Alerts” if you are “borrowing” something. But the real purpose is clear: to protect you from somebody using an AirTag to surreptitiously track you.

When you see the alert, you can tap the notification to get a screen that will allow you to make the AirTag start beeping. The alert will also instruct you on how to disable the AirTag by removing the battery.

Which Should You Buy? Samsung Smart Tag or Apple AirTag?

Both the Airtag and the SmartTag are targeted at different users since only iPhone users can use AirTags and Samsung Galaxy users having access to use the Smart tag however if you have both devices and want to decide on what to use, remember the following.

Both Smart tag and Airtag have (AR) technology to visually guide you towards where your missing item is located using your smartphone’s camera on their latest phones, both have a replaceable battery, both can make a sound to find lost items closer and both can locate lost items on a map with the help of other closer devices in their ecosystem. Pricing of both tags are around $29 and $30 in most cases.

The Smart tag however adds an extra feature for IOT. You can the button on the Smart tag to manage smart activities in your home like single press to off your lights of something.
