In this piece, we will look at Apple’s iOS vs Google’s Android OS to understand who makes the better phone operating system. iOS runs on iPhones and Android on multiple manufacturer devices like Samsung, LG, even Google. We will take a look and see what iOS 13 does better than Android, using Android 10, the latest.
Face ID / Face Unlock
This is hardware related but when it comes to face unlock Apple’s is better. I will say simply because from a software standpoint all of the apps have faced unlocked face ID integrated into their security. If you want to sign in such as a banking app, it integrates it whereas the Google pixel took a long time to get that developer support. Because they decided to drop a fingerprint scanner though Android still does support fingerprint scanners which makes it better if you are looking for a phone with a fingerprint scanner and maybe not one with a bigger notch.
This is the most obvious one because it’s been around so long and because Google is doing its best to catch up with Apple in this aspect. When you go to software update most iPhones, you will see Your software is up to date and that is the same across multiple iPhones. On Android, the pixel variant does get updates right away from Google. However, with other manufacturers like Samsung, updates are generally slower and things get a lot more fragmented. The delay mostly happens because the manufacturer tries to customize it to the best of the UI. That’s been a problem on Android for a long time.
Apple supports iOS 13 on much older devices, you can actually run iOS 13, which is on the latest iPhone all the way back on the iPhone 6s and iPhone SE. That is the continued support that Apple does give throughout their devices. This increases the value to these devices since these devices get supported longer, people seem to hold on to them longer and their value stays true.
Though Google is starting to integrate Google Duo into its operating system over, it’s not fully integrated yet. So anyone with an Android phone doesn’t necessarily have Google Duo signed in and ready to go for a video call or receive one. Whereas with Apple devices, Apple forces you to sign in to FaceTime and have it on your device integrated within the dialer app. So once that starts happening on Android, it can’t compete in terms of video chatting in comparing iOS vs Android.
Another big one specifically around the world is iMessage because you can send things such as files, get read receipts, there are a lot more chat features involved in iMessage and it’s sent over data as opposed to your wireless signal. Google is all over the place with messaging but they’re not really anywhere near competing with iMessage just yet. RCS is starting to roll out however, it’s not integrated directly into the Android operating system and until they do that, they will not compete with iMessage.
The next feature that iOS does better than Android is airdrop. You can take a picture, go into the photo, share and go ahead and select airdrop. the recipient device will be ready to receive it. This works with other Apple devices whether you have a Macbook and iPad another iPhone. That process is much more difficult on an Android phone. Google apparently, is working on that in an update coming soon, however, it has not been there for a while so airdrop is far superior to any file transfer system on Android. This one is a bit of an opinion, but I find animations to be better in iOS. They just make the device feel more fluid and more smooth. However, I will say unless Apple jumps on the screens with higher refresh rate bandwagon, they will actually fall behind Android because with higher fresh rate refresh rate displays, it makes things seem smoother whereas if you added a higher refresh rate to Apple’s very good animations in general that will add to the operating system fluidity and smoothness.
Something else iOS does better is within display settings. You can switch to Dark mode on the fly and they offer you is a way to customize it so you can actually have its sunrise to sunset or a custom schedule whereas with Android you want to turn the dark theme on all right, you got to check the box and that’s pretty much it. You can toggle it on and off with the settings the toggles up here, but that’s it and it’s a little strange because on Android they have a night light to actually make the display more warm get rid of blue light and you can completely customize this. so I don’t know why they couldn’t just take this schedule and put it in the night mode, so that’s definitely something iOS does better when comparing iOS vs Android.
I think Google really dropped the ball in the latest version of Android with regards to screen recording. With iOS, you swipe from the button then press the recording app. Having a screen recorder is really handy but it’s not built-in natively into Android 10 You can screen record on your Android device using a third-party app. Unlike the iPhone, there is not currently a built-in app or feature to screen record on your Android device. Both Samsung and LG smartphones running Android 10 have managed to include a screen recorder feature in their OEM skin.
Specifically, in iOS 13 and the later models, the iPhone’s battery life has been incredible. iOS 13 does a very good job at stand by battery life, so when you don’t plug my phone in it only loses a few percent whereas, on Android 10, you can lose upwards of 10% if I leave it off the charger overnight.
The standouts are the ones that have been around between iOS and Android for so long that Android has not been able to duplicate such as airdrop, iMessage, FaceTime. They have tried, they’re working towards it but they still haven’t gotten to that level. It is interesting to see how Android will try and catch up but those reasons are big ones why iOS 13 is better.
