Huawei has lost access to Android and Google.

Google has officially cut phone maker Huawei off from some updates to the Android operating system, Reuters reports.

This means the tech giant will immediately lose access to updates to Google’s Android operating system. The next version of its Android smartphones will also lose access to services including the Google Play Store, Gmail and YouTube apps.

“Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system, and the next version of its smartphones outside of China will also lose access to popular applications and services including the Google Play Store and Gmail app,” Reuters noted.

This effectively means no further Android security updates for devices new and old, including the recent P30 and P30 Pro, Mate 20 Pro, and many more. On Wednesday the Trump administration added Huawei to its “entity list“, blocking the sale or transfer of American technology without a licence.

“Until there is a clear statement from Google, it is hard to speculate about the ramifications,” said Ben Wood, from the CCS Insight consultancy.

In the interim this would be a big blow to Huawei in the west and other foreign countries since Android smartphone users would not want an Android phone that lacks access to Google’s Play Store, its virtual assistant or security updates, assuming these are among the services that would be pulled.

But in the long-run, this might be an opportunity for smartphone vendors and users in general. A reason to seriously consider the need for a viable alternative to Google’s operating system, particularly at a time the search giant is trying to push its own Pixel brand at their expense.

Huawei’s Unconfirmed Solution.

Huawei appears to have already anticipated this and has developed a back-up operating system in case something like this happens. This was after the mobile chief confirmed they have developed a backup operating system which started back in 2012 for their phones, tablets, and computers in the situation Huawei is cut of the Google Android system.
