Google Says Attackers Used Zero-Day Vulnerability to Control Your Android Phone.

Google’s own project zero research group says, There’s apparently a dangerous zero-day vulnerability in android. The Project Zero Group says that hackers are currently exploiting the vulnerability and gaining full control over a bunch of Android phones. The list of affected devices includes the following;

  • Pixel 1
  • Pixel 1 XL
  • Pixel 2
  • Pixel 2 XL
  • Huawei P20
  • Xiaomi Redmi 5A
  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 5
  • Xiaomi A1
  • Oppo A3
  • Moto Z3
  • Android Oreo LG phones
  • Samsung Galaxy S7
  • Samsung Galaxy S8
  • Samsung Galaxy S9

Phones can be infected when the user installs an untrusted app or through online interactions that also make use of a vulnerability in the chrome browser. The Android team says Pixel 1 and 2 should receive patches for the flaw in an October security update but it’s unclear when other devices will get patches. While the risk of infection for the average user is slim it’s probably a good idea to avoid installing sketchy apps and use a non-chrome mobile browser for now.

Google must be Searching its pockets for loose change as a recent ruling in the UK’s court of appeal means that the US-based tech giant may be faced with a hefty bill of at least 3.2 billion pounds over alleged data harvesting. The legal action is being brought by campaign group Google you owe us, who claim that 4.4 million iPhone users in the UK may have had sensitive and personal data collected by Google which then used that data such as an individual shopping habit, sexual interests, and geographical location, to categorize individuals for advertisers.

Google allegedly collected data from iPhone user’s safari history by bypassing iPhone privacy settings between August 2011 and February 2012. While Google has stated that the case should be dismissed, it said that if the litigation is to go ahead it could see each of those 4.4 million users receive a tidy 750 pounds. That’s $925.
