If you are reading this in Ghana, there is a high probability you ever had to provide your Zip code or Postal code during one of your online activities but my guess is you probably used 233, 00233, or 23321. These numbers have been an online Zip code myth for long enough that I personally used it many times but let us try and understand the whole Zip code and Postal code thing first.

What’s the difference between Zip Code and Postal Code.

The two codes are basically the same in their purpose, but the term Zip code is mainly used in the USA; Postal Code is commonly used in other countries.

A postal code (also known locally in various English-speaking countries throughout the world as a postcode, post code, PIN or ZIP Code) is a series of letters or digits or both, sometimes including spaces or punctuation, included in a postal address for the purpose of sorting mail.

A ZIP Code is a postal code used by the United States Postal Service (USPS). The term ZIP is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan, which was chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently and quickly. So basically US sites will tend to request for your zip code mostly while British or other english speaking sites might request your Postal Code rather than your Zip code. Thing is you can use both Zip code or Postal code interchangably.

Does Ghana have a Zip Code or Postal Code?

Postal codes were adopted in Ghana on 18 October 2017, following the launch of the National Digital Address System. The Digital Address System assigned postal codes and unique addresses to every square in Ghana. Ghana’s postal codes are alphanumeric. The first two characters form the postcode district – the first letter represents the region, and the second character represents the district in which the address is located. The next three to five digits represent the postcode area and identify a more precise location within the area.
